6mm Shaft Aluminum Potentiometer Rotary Switch Knob
This is an aluminum knob sized for standard 6 mm potentiometer and rotary switch shafts, used on audio amplifiers, power supplies, test instruments and lighting controls. It is CNC turned from 6061 aluminum with a set-screw, D-shaped or knurled bore, then brushed, blasted or anodized. Brass and stainless versions are available. It suits electronics makers needing a robust standard-size metal knob.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for 6mm shaft aluminum potentiometer rotary switch knob.
Because 6 mm shafts are the most common size for panel potentiometers and rotary switches, this knob is designed around that interface. The bore is reamed or bored to a close sliding fit, and a radial M3 set-screw hole or a D-flat profile is added depending on the shaft type. The outer grip, skirt and top face are turned in one setup to keep the knob running true when rotated.
Brushed aluminum with clear anodize suits test equipment and hi-fi panels. Black anodize with a white indicator gives clear readability on dark panels. Bead blasting gives a matte, fingerprint-resistant surface. Brass knobs offer more weight and a vintage look, and stainless steel suits harsh industrial environments where cleaning chemicals are used.
Bore diameter is checked with pin gauges, the set-screw thread with thread gauges, and runout is checked on finished knobs. Every knob is inspected for surface defects and indicator alignment. Typical uses include hi-fi amplifier volume controls, bench power supply dials, rotary selector switches, lighting dimmers and industrial instrument panels.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will a 6 mm knob fit a 1/4 inch shaft?
No, not reliably. A 1/4 inch shaft is 6.35 mm, so it will not enter a 6 mm bore, and a 6.35 mm bore on a 6 mm shaft will be loose. We machine bores for either size, so specify which shaft your potentiometer or switch uses.
Is a set screw or D-shaft fit better?
A D-shaft fit locks the knob's orientation and is quicker to install, which is good for knobs with indicators. A set screw works on round shafts and allows adjusting the pointer position, but can loosen over time unless thread locker is used.
How do I get a quote for 6mm shaft aluminum potentiometer rotary switch knob?
Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
