Knurled Aluminum Guitar Rotary Encoder Control Knob
This is a knurled aluminum control knob designed for rotary encoders and potentiometers in guitars, effects pedals, synthesizers and audio interfaces. It is CNC turned from 6061 aluminum, with a D-shaft, knurled or set-screw bore, a fine diamond knurl for grip and an engraved pointer. It is anodized in custom colors for audio brands and boutique gear makers.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for knurled aluminum guitar rotary encoder control knob.
Encoder knobs are usually smaller and lighter than pot knobs, so wall thickness and bore depth are planned to keep the knob stiff while matching the short shafts of many encoders. The knurl is formed or cut on the lathe; a fine-pitch diamond knurl gives better grip than straight knurls for quick adjustments. A pointer line or dot is laser engraved after anodizing so it is perfectly crisp.
6061 aluminum makes light knobs that suit endless-rotation encoders, where low inertia helps precise control. Black and silver anodize are classic; colored anodize helps users identify functions at a glance. A bead-blasted finish under the anodize gives a soft matte look that hides fingerprints. Brass knobs give more weight if a damped feel is preferred.
Bore fit is tested on the specified encoder shaft, and pointer alignment relative to the D-flat is checked so the indicator points correctly. Knurl quality and anodize color are inspected on every knob. Typical uses include guitar effects pedals, synthesizer encoders, audio interfaces, DJ controllers, studio monitors and amplifier front panels.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can the pointer be aligned with the D-flat on the shaft?
Yes. We machine the D-bore and then laser engrave the pointer referenced to the flat, so every knob points the same way when fitted. Tell us the desired angle between the pointer and the flat, especially if your panel graphics use a specific zero position.
Why is knurl pitch important on a control knob?
Knurl pitch affects grip and feel. A fine diamond knurl gives secure grip without feeling sharp, ideal for frequent small adjustments. Coarse straight knurls look bold but grip less evenly. We can make samples with different knurls so you can choose by feel.
