Laser Cut Galvanized Steel Sheet Metal Parts

These are laser cut sheet metal parts in galvanized steel, stainless steel and aluminum, with bending, painting, polishing or powder coating as required. Galvanized sheet gives built-in zinc corrosion protection at low cost. Cut features are held at 0.05–0.10 mm. They suit HVAC, enclosure, solar and building-equipment makers needing economical, rust-resistant brackets, ducts and panels.

Manufacturing

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for laser cut galvanized steel sheet metal parts.

Galvanized steel cuts well on fiber lasers, though the zinc layer vaporizes at the kerf, leaving a narrow bare-steel edge. Nitrogen assist keeps edges clean. Fumes are extracted at the cutting head. Bending galvanized sheet is straightforward, but tight radii can crack the zinc coating on the outside, so inside bend radius is chosen relative to thickness. Welding is avoided where possible because it burns off zinc locally.

Hot-dip and electro-galvanized sheet both protect steel through sacrificial zinc; hot-dip carries a thicker coating for outdoor use, electro-galvanized has a smoother surface for painting. Cut edges get some protection from the surrounding zinc, but cosmetic or harsh-environment parts are often powder coated on top. Stainless and aluminum are alternatives that need no coating, at higher material cost.

Parts are checked for profile, bend angles and hole positions at first article, and zinc coating condition is inspected visually after bending. Critical dimensions are 100% inspected. Typical uses include HVAC duct brackets, solar panel mounts, cable tray components, electrical enclosure back plates, appliance back panels and building hardware such as joist hangers and brackets.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will laser cut edges of galvanized steel rust?

The cut edge loses its zinc locally, but nearby zinc provides some sacrificial protection, so thin galvanized parts indoors usually stay rust-free. For outdoor or humid environments, powder coating or painting after cutting seals the edges and greatly extends service life.

Can galvanized steel parts be welded?

They can, but welding burns off the zinc and creates fumes, leaving an unprotected zone that needs zinc-rich paint touch-up. Where possible, we design galvanized parts to join with rivets, clinching or fasteners instead, which preserves the coating.

How do I get a quote for laser cut galvanized steel sheet metal parts?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
