3/4/5-Axis CNC Milled Aluminum Gearbox Housing

This is a custom gearbox, reducer or actuator housing milled from 6061 or 7075 aluminum, with steel versions on request, using 3-, 4- and 5-axis CNC machines. Bearing bores, gear-center distances and sealing faces are held at 0.01–0.05 mm, and housings are anodized, painted or powder coated. It suits drive, robotics and machinery engineers needing accurate housings without casting tooling.

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for 3/4/5-axis cnc milled aluminum gearbox housing.

The core of a gearbox housing is bearing bore alignment and center distance. We bore matched bores in one setup, or line-bore through both halves bolted together, so shafts run parallel and gears mesh correctly. 4- and 5-axis indexing reaches side ports, oil plugs and mounting flanges from the same datum. Sealing faces are finish-milled flat for gaskets or liquid sealant.

6061-T6 is economical and suits most light and medium-duty housings; 7075-T6 is stronger for compact, high-torque designs. Aluminum conducts heat well, which helps lubricant temperature. Bores can be left bare for bearing fits while external faces are anodized, painted or powder coated. Steel housings are chosen for very high loads or when thermal expansion mismatch with steel bearings must be minimized.

Bore diameters, roundness, center distances and parallelism are measured on CMM at first article, with reports provided. Production housings have critical bores 100% inspected. Typical uses include robot joint reducers, planetary gearbox housings, linear actuator bodies, motor end bells and pump drive housings. Covers and housings can be supplied as matched pairs with dowel holes so they reassemble in the same orientation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep gearbox bearing bores aligned?

We machine bores that share an axis in a single setup, or bolt the housing halves together and line-bore them as one. This avoids errors from re-clamping. Alignment, center distance and parallelism are then checked on CMM at first article.

Is aluminum suitable for a gearbox housing with steel bearings?

Yes, aluminum housings are widely used. Because aluminum expands more than steel with heat, bearing fits are chosen to stay secure across operating temperature, sometimes with steel sleeves in high-load designs. We can advise on fits if you share the operating range.

How do I get a quote for 3/4/5-axis cnc milled aluminum gearbox housing?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
