CNC Turned Grade 5 Titanium and Stainless Steel Shafts
These are precision shafts, axles, pins and bolts turned on CNC lathes from Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), Grade 2 titanium or 303/304/316 stainless steel. Journals and threads are held down to ±0.01 mm, and parts are inspected 100% on critical dimensions under ISO 9001. They suit motorsport, bicycle, marine and medical-device engineers seeking light, corrosion-proof rotating or load-bearing parts.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for cnc turned grade 5 titanium and stainless steel shafts.
Titanium is turned at low surface speed with sharp, positive-rake carbide and high-pressure coolant, because heat concentrates at the tool tip and wears it quickly. Constant feed prevents rubbing, which would work-harden and gall the surface. Long shafts are supported by tailstock or steady rest. Threads are single-point cut or rolled; rolled threads have better fatigue life, valuable on titanium bolts.
Ti-6Al-4V is about 45% lighter than steel with comparable strength, and it does not rust in seawater or sweat. Grade 2 is softer but more formable and slightly more corrosion-resistant. Stainless steel is cheaper and easier to machine, so it suits shafts where weight is less critical. Titanium can be anodized to colors such as blue, gold and purple without dyes, and stainless is passivated.
Journal diameters are measured with micrometers, runout with dial indicators, and threads with gauges. Material certificates trace each titanium bar lot. Every critical dimension is 100% inspected before shipment, and inspection reports are available on request. Typical uses include bicycle axles and bolts, racing suspension pins, marine shafts, instrument spindles and medical-device prototype shafts.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is titanium worth it over stainless steel for shafts?
Titanium Gr5 saves about 45% weight at similar strength and offers outstanding corrosion resistance, which matters in racing, cycling, aerospace and marine uses. It costs more to buy and machine. If weight is not critical, stainless steel usually delivers the function at lower cost.
Can titanium parts be colored?
Yes. Titanium anodizing creates colors such as blue, gold, bronze and purple by growing a thin oxide layer; no dyes are used, so colors do not fade in sunlight. Exact shades depend on voltage and surface finish, so we approve samples first.
How do I get a quote for cnc turned grade 5 titanium and stainless steel shafts?
Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
