Blue Zinc Plated Carbon Steel Turned Bolts and Standoffs
These are carbon steel bolts, studs and threaded standoffs CNC turned from bar and finished with blue (trivalent) zinc plating. The plating gives a light blue-silver color and basic corrosion protection for indoor and sheltered parts. They are produced for automotive, electrical cabinet and equipment assemblers who need non-standard lengths, threads or hex sizes in carbon steel at a reasonable cost.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for blue zinc plated carbon steel turned bolts and standoffs.
Standoffs are turned from hex or round bar, with internal threads tapped at one or both ends and external studs cut where specified. Bolts are turned with custom shank lengths, then hex heads are milled if not made from hex stock. All parts are deburred before plating so the zinc deposits evenly and threads do not bind after coating.
Low-carbon steels such as 1215 and Q235 machine easily and plate well, while 1045 or 4140 are used when higher strength is needed. Blue zinc plating is typically 5–12 µm thick; yellow or black passivates add more corrosion resistance. Thread allowances are adjusted so plated threads still accept standard gauges. Hardened steels need baking after plating to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.
Threads are gauge-checked after plating, and plating thickness can be measured on request. Critical dimensions are inspected before shipment. Typical uses include PCB and panel standoffs, mounting studs in electrical cabinets, machinery spacers, automotive bracket bolts and threaded supports in appliances, where stainless steel would add unnecessary cost and the parts stay sheltered from weather.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much corrosion protection does blue zinc plating give?
Blue zinc is a thin protective layer suited to indoor or sheltered environments. It slows rust well in dry and moderately humid conditions but is not intended for constant outdoor or salt exposure. For harsher environments, specify thicker zinc with a sealer, zinc-nickel, or switch to stainless steel.
Will zinc plating make my threads too tight?
Plating adds thickness on the thread flanks, so we cut the threads with an allowance that leaves room for the coating. After plating, threads are checked with go/no-go gauges. If your drawing specifies a thread class for after plating, we machine to suit that requirement.
How do I get a quote for blue zinc plated carbon steel turned bolts and standoffs?
Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
