5-Axis CNC Machined Stainless Steel Impeller
This is a custom impeller, inducer or blower wheel machined on simultaneous 5-axis CNC equipment from 304/316 stainless steel or 6061/7075 aluminum. Twisted blade surfaces, hub bores and keyways are cut from solid, with critical bore features held down to ±0.01 mm. It suits pump, compressor, fan and marine-propulsion engineers developing or replacing rotating flow parts.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for 5-axis cnc machined stainless steel impeller.
Impeller blades are freeform surfaces that need the tool axis to tilt continuously, which is why simultaneous 5-axis machining is required. We rough between blades with ball or barrel tools, then finish the blade surfaces and fillets with smooth, collision-checked toolpaths. The hub bore and keyway are turned and broached first so all blade machining references the rotating axis. Thin trailing edges are finished last.
316 stainless resists seawater and chemicals, making it the common choice for pump and marine impellers, but its toughness means longer cycle times. 304 is suitable for water and mild media. Aluminum 7075 or 6061 keeps inertia low for air blowers and test prototypes. Finishes include passivation and polishing for stainless, which reduces surface friction, and hard anodizing for aluminum wear resistance.
Blade profiles are checked on CMM against the CAD model, along with bore size, runout and blade thickness. Dynamic balancing can be arranged to your grade. Critical dimensions are 100% inspected before shipment. Typical uses include centrifugal pump impellers, turbocharger compressor prototypes, blower wheels, water-jet inducers, marine pump rotors and process mixer rotors.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why does an impeller need 5-axis machining?
Impeller blades are twisted and overlap, so a 3-axis cutter cannot reach between them without collisions. Simultaneous 5-axis motion tilts the tool to follow each blade surface and fillet in one setup, which produces accurate, smooth blades without welding or casting.
Can you balance machined impellers?
Yes. Dynamic balancing can be arranged to the balance grade on your drawing, such as G6.3 or G2.5. Material is removed at designated balance locations. Specify the grade and allowable correction areas so balancing does not affect blade performance.
How do I get a quote for 5-axis cnc machined stainless steel impeller?
